LifeLock Jobs Promote National Internet Safety Month
Those with LifeLock jobs are doing their part to warn consumers of potential identity theft complications.
After being declared as National Internet Safety Month by the U.S. Senate, LifeLock is using the month of June as a time to educate consumers about the potential threats of online identity theft. LifeLock is an industry leader in proactive identity theft protection.
The company is encouraging Internet safety organizations, law enforcement, educators and others to use the month of June to increase their efforts to raise awareness about the potential threats found online, including identity theft.
"Every day there are millions upon millions of consumers around the world using peer-to-peer file sharing networks to download or share movies, software or other documents over the Internet," Todd Davis, Chairman and CEO of LifeLock, said. "Identity thieves are using these same networks to peer into computers and access files like tax returns that contain the personally identifiable information of consumers, potentially putting unknowing consumers at risk for identity theft. It's in the best interest of consumers everywhere to uninstall file-sharing programs to lessen their vulnerabilities."
Anyone who uses file-sharing technology can unintentionally expose the contents of their hard drives to other people on the network. Identity thieves can access and download personal information simply by searching for specific keywords.
A 2009 episode of The Today Show demonstrated how easy it is to find this type of information by uncovering 25,800 student loan applications, more than 150,000 tax returns, and about 626,000 credit reports on file-sharing networks.
An article published by The Washington Post earlier this year reported that the Federal Trade Commission was warning almost 100 organizations, including companies, schools and local governments, that personal information of their customers or employees - ranging from Social Security numbers to health information to drivers' licenses - had been leaked to file-sharing networks.
LifeLock is the only American company that offers an identity theft solution to help detect breaches of personal information on peer to peer file-sharing networks and provide a closed-loop solution.
