Looking for Phoenix Management Jobs? Check Out the Retail Industry This Holiday Season

Email This Post Print This Post

If you're looking for Phoenix management jobs, you may want to check out the retail industry this holiday season.

A recent report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. found that while retailers will most likely continue to be cautious when it comes to hiring in the coming months, increased sales the last two months may make it easier for them to hire some seasonal workers.

The report predicts that retailers will hire more workers this year than during 2009, but holiday hiring will not return to pre-recession levels, with retailers adding about 600,000 employees this Christmas season.

During October, November, and December of last year, retailers hired 501,400 additional employees, which was a 30 percent increase from 2008, when seasonal hiring fell to a 22-year low.

"This year we expect to see further gains in seasonal hiring, but it probably will not achieve the levels we saw in 2006 or 2007 when retailers' holiday payrolls grew by 746,800 and 720,800, respectively," Challenger CEO John A. Challenger said. "There is still a lot of doubt about the sustainability of this economy.

"Retailers do not want to be caught with too many workers at a time when many of the fundamentals needed for strong consumer spending remain a little shaky," he added. "There are still nearly 15 million Americans out of work and many have lost their homes or are struggling to hang on to them. This does not bode well for heavy holiday spending."

There are some signs of optimism, however, as retailers plan to layoff 65 percent fewer workers this year than last. In addition, the retail industry has increased by 329,400 employees since February, and sales increased by .3 percent in July and .4 percent in August.

So where should you look for holiday jobs in the Phoenix area? Challenger suggests that the best opportunities will be with large discount stores like Target and Wal-Mart. It's important to remember that some of these stores may perform a criminal background (Click here) check on you.

Another popular store for holiday shopping, Toys"R"Us, is planning to hire 10,000 seasonal workers throughout the nation as it opens 600 express stores. About 13 of those stores have already opened throughout Arizona and more are on the way.
